Deck Staining around Portland Oregon

After decks have been cleaned, it is a good time to stain or treat them. This makes the deck more: attractive, usable and enduring than if left untreated.

There are many colors of deck stains. Samples are available and a showroom for viewing the stains on different woods. The showroom is at the wood stain manufacturers on 2232 E Burnside. Link to colors is further down this page.

Stains that change the color of the wood have UV protections. These are recommended to protect wood from the sun. Two coats of stain give a beautiful deep rich stain that sinks down into the wood and gives a beautiful full color. This also gives maximum protection from weathering.

I only use professional stains that have been proven to outlast the cheap brands. These long proven stains provide better protection and durable beauty. This makes your deck, hot tub and/or furniture more enjoyable for a longer time.

Tips on deck maintenance and yearly cleaning are available.

Just contact me or ask me when I come out to give you a bid.

Stain should be applied when moisture content of wood is 22% or less and when the temperature is above 47 degrees and rising. There needs to be a 24 hour rain-free time after the stain has been applied.

Railing can be sanded smooth and rounded on edges to prevent surface water buildup that harbors algae and mildew.

After the initial stripping to bare wood, subsequent deck maintenance involves cleaning the deck (with deck cleaner) and applying another coat over the existing stain. The deck / furniture does not need to be stripped down to bare wood again.

A deck that is on it's last leg can be stripped down to bare wood, rotten boards replaced and then primed and painted. While a painted deck does not show the beauty of the wood grain, when the wood is that old, there isn't much beauty to show :) This method of painting it extends the time before the deck must be replaced. When replacing floorboards, a flashing may be installed over the floor joists (especially on 2nd and 3rd story decks) to prevent alage streaks from rainwater and debris dripping through the floorboards. This flashing also significantly extends the life of the floor joists.
