Gutter Cleaning around Portland OregonGutter cleaning is a necessity for most houses. It keeps the water traveling down the downspouts and into drains or yards instead of overflowing the sides. Overflowing gutters are a nuisance and can increase maintenance on a house. Gutters over the entry way or deck may overflow in sheets onto the path and people walking below. Water falling over the gutter edge splashes onto siding and windows getting them dirty. When the wind blows, the falling water may dampen the side of the house. If gutters are left full for too long, plants may begin growing in them. The valleys above the gutters should be kept clear of debris to allow water to flow off the roof quickly. There are many options for keeping the water flowing down the downspouts. First, the downspouts will need to be unplugged and usually the gutters cleaned too. Next come the options for preventing downspouts from being clogged. Each option will be described in detail when you follow the links. First, gutter filters are a common solution. They allow rainwater into the gutter and keep debris out. Second, little "gutter muffins" can be installed cheaply. Third, even better downspout strainers can be installed to keep material from plugging the downspout. Fourth, an enlarged downspout that resists plugging can replace an existing one. Fifth, backed up drains can be unplugged to allow water to flow down the spouts again. And lastly, a combination of the above may be used. Please visit each of the links to learn more about the solution that is right for you. Feel free to call me too if you would like to discuss your home maintenance needs in person. Use them right, or lose them :) The problem: These gutters have pulled loose because: They weren't sloped towards the downspout, they got full, they were full of rain water, didn't have a drip cap that reached to the gutter, the end of the wood rotted out, and the nails pulled out from weight of water. The fix: lift gutters to proper height so water flows towards downspout, replace nails with longer better-gripping lag screws, install proper drip cap that reaches from shingle edge to overlap gutter, clean them out so the water flows and install gutter filters to keep them flowing. These are upper gutters and won't get cleaned every year because: who wants to do that? So, the best thing for everyone is to install gutter filters on these hard to reach puppies. I mean gutters :) That way, they get cleaned once and keep working for years so you don't have to make the trip up there every year. |
