The Walk Around Class
Hello, and thanks for checking out this page.
Who: Brad Lewis and you. I have been doing home maintenance for over six years now. As I've learned more, I have been amazed at how little home owners know or have been taught about taking care of their home. Since I've learned lots of tips (and I love to teach), I have decided to offer an inexpensive ($50) class on how to simply and inexpensively maintain your home.
How much: $50 per family. For example, you pay $50 and can bring your wife/spouse. Please no children unless the home we are going around has someone that can watch the kids. If you or your spouse can help others watch kids, that would be great. For liability and respect of homeowners, please check before bringing children. If your son or daughter is 16 or older and can behave :) that is fine.
What: Things I'm going to teach:
- Curb appeal and how to make your home more attractive and welcoming when you come home
- How to clean your gutters safely
- How to unclog downspouts
- Networking with neighbors. Sharing tools
- Ladders and ladder safety. How to carry ladders. How to set up ladders and take them down. Ladder accessories.
- Principles of gutter systems. Names of gutter parts and how to talk about them so it makes sense to others.
- Home maintenance tools: ladders, scoops, shovels, rakes, siding brush, poles
- How to wash windows
- How to unplug drains (most drains)
- How to clean siding and gutters
- Roofs. Safety harnesses. Roof anchors. Roof safety. Shingles, shingle terms, chimneys and flashing
- Sources: Where to buy things that you need. You won't find the things you need the most at the big hardware stores all the time.
These are all the things that I would like to teach. If we have more time, then I will teach more. The class will be 3-4 hours long. The class size must be five to seven (paying) people (not written in stone) so that everyone can ask questions and get their money's worth.
This is very "hands on" class. With the homeowner's permission, you may climb ladders to try them out and try techniques and tools discusses. You will not go on the roof. So don't get your hopes up (pun intended). Bring gloves.
Why: I love to teach and empower people.
I need one person who will host the event. Hopefully we get a house that has more "deferred maintenance". The goal of the class isn't to put people down, but to learn. And I believe that a house that needs more work will be a better way to illustrate what happens when homes aren't maintained. If you have a "fixer" house, that would be great. You will probably get some home maintenance work done as we practice (with your permission) on your house. If you want the class at your house, then please put this in the Contact Me page in the Notes section. |
