Roof Valleys
Roof valleys need to be kept clean so the water can flow off the roof. Initially, water can flow through the needles, but as the weight builds, the bottom needles get compressed and decompose. This mat of needles slows or may block the water from flowing off the roof. Also, the needles form carbonic acid (indicated by black needles) as they rot. This eats at the roof.
Needles plug up roof valleys. The valley needs brushed or air-blown clear so the water can flow off the roof quicker.
